Protection Shelters did a great job

Thank you so much for the attention to detail and the hard work your team did when leveling the ground for my shelter, and then getting it into place. Your guys asked my opinion and preference on the finer details and then they set about making it happen. They did a great job and I really appreciate the extra work spreading the gumbo around the base of the shelter, too. Before your men were out of the park, a couple stopped and asked if they could look at my shelter. They had the ground tour and were given some […]

BY BRYAN DEAN bdean@opubco.com • Modified: May 31, 2013 at 10:06 pm • Published: May 31, 2013 Part of the terror of an EF5 tornado like the one that hit Moore on May 20 is the notion that nothing aboveground can survive a direct hit and the 200 mph winds that rip homes off foundations. But that’s not exactly true. Above ground storm shelters held up exceptionally well in the tornado and could be a better choice than a traditional underground storm cellar, said Larry Tanner, a research associate at the National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University. Tanner […]

Written By Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle Published  April 18, 2012, at 7:49 p.m. Updated  April 19, 2012, at 3:27 p.m. QUIVIRA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Tiffany Vincent came to Kansas to burn prairie grass. But much of this week shes been taking a chain saw to huge trees. Sometimes tornadoes happen, said Vincent, an Iowa Conservation Corps member working at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Her six-person crew spent much of Saturday night in a cramped, above-ground shelter as two tornadoes cut paths up to a half-mile wide through the refuge. It kind of puts the wild into (a) wildlife […]
